Spacious, graceful, and made for everything worth writing down.
The Companion (A5 Bifold) is handcrafted from full-grain, Italian vegetable-tanned leather — a material that softens with use and deepens in character over time.
Inside, it holds 2 to 4 inserts (depending on ribbon setup), ready for journaling, sketching, planning, or whatever needs putting on paper.
Made to order with your choice of elastic color, grommet options, and optional embossing. Each one is thoughtfully crafted, start to finish.
*Please allow 4-6 weeks for your journal to ship. Depending on the order volume and materials, some shipping may be a bit shorter or occasionally a little longer.

About the Leather
About the Leather
We use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather from two tanneries in Tuscany, Italy — both certified by the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium (Pelle al Vegetale), a mark of authenticity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
This traditional tanning method uses only natural materials like tree bark, leaves, and roots — never harsh chemicals. It takes weeks to complete, but the result is leather that’s rich in character, built to last, and meant to evolve with you.
The hides are uncorrected and natural, so no two journals are exactly alike. You might notice variations in grain, shifts in tone, or the occasional mark from the animal’s life. These aren’t flaws, they’re part of the story, and what makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Over time, your journal will develop a soft sheen and a deep patina, becoming even more personal with use.
We work with two distinct leather finishes:
- Used for our year-round color range. This leather has a lightly waxed, smooth surface with a touch of firmness, giving structure while still feeling supple.
- Used for some limited seasonal colors. This leather has a velvety-matte surface and a softer, more pliable feel, while still being cut to the same thickness as our other leathers for durability.
Every piece is made to be carried for decades, wearing in, not out.

The quality is amazing, per usual. I do have one small complaint. It isn't quite wide enough to completely cover my 5 year Hobonichi. I had watched a video with a bifold where there seemed to be plenty of room for a large journal and a smaller one in anA5 bifold, but that is not the case with mine. If I fiddle with it, I can have the front completely covered but it takes quite a bit of finagling to get it to do that and it leaves about a quarter inch gap on the back. It's a beautiful journal but the lack of coverage was disappointing. I should have asked to have it cut a bit wider. I will continue to purchase from Marie because I enjoy her products and her content.
Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful review, it truly means a lot to me!
I really appreciate you sharing this so honestly. This is incredibly helpful feedback. I’m going to be more intentional about including guidance around sizing and thickness moving forward, especially for fuller journals like a 5-year Hobonichi, so it’s easier to know what will fit best.
I’m so glad you’re still enjoying the journal overall. And it means even more that you’d continue to support my work.
If you ever want something adjusted for a specific setup, I’m always happy to customize sizing to make sure it fits just right.
Thank you again for your honesty and for being here. It helps me grow and refine what I’m creating!
My dream journal! Palisky has truly put everything I want into a journal to life. The customizations and quality are second to none. Marie has obviously put so much thought into making these journals as beautiful and as comfortable to use as possible. As soon as I received my first order, I ended up putting in an order for another one.
I’ve finally found my perfect journal! This is literally everything that I’ve ever wanted in a refillable journal. The customization options that Marie offers are second to none, and the craftsmanship is unmatched—even compared to larger, more well-known companies. I received my journal and immediately placed an order for another one.
I ended up switch my order to a sapphire A5 bi-fold journal instead and I absolutely am in love with it. I am going to use my leather journal to house my Hobonici Cousin which fits get in my bi-fold. I definitely would recommend buying a Leather journal from PALISKY she is amazing to work with and she is always in communication with you.
Smells great and looks beautiful
