Frequently Asked Questions

About the Journals

How are the journals made?

Each journal is crafted entirely by hand — no machines, no factory lines. Just simple tools, an embossing press, and a lot of care. Every fold and detail is shaped manually, so no two are exactly alike.
Because of this process, your journal may have small variations — a slightly uneven edge, a mark from a tool. These aren’t flaws — they’re part of the charm. If you’re looking for perfect uniformity, handmade may not be for you, but if you love character and story, you’re in the right place.

What kind of leather do you use?

We use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather from a family-owned tannery in Tuscany. It’s natural, durable, and considered one of the highest-quality leathers available. It’s made to last and to grow more beautiful with time.

What is vegetable-tanned leather?

Vegetable tanning is a traditional, plant-based process that uses natural tannins like oak bark and chestnut instead of harsh chemicals. It takes time, but the result is sustainable, deeply rich leather that evolves with you.

Why does my journal look different than the photos?

No two Palisky journals are exactly alike, and that’s by design. Because we use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, each hide carries its own story: unique grain, natural markings, subtle shifts in tone. These variations come from the animal’s life, the traditional dyeing process, and the fact that we don’t sand or artificially correct the surface.

Each journal is crafted entirely by hand, not in a factory, but with simple tools, an embossing press, and meticulous care. You might see a slight curve, an edge that isn’t perfectly straight, or a tool mark left behind. These aren't imperfections — they’re signs of real human craftsmanship.

If you're looking for perfect uniformity, handmade may not be for you. But if you love character, story, and a piece that feels truly one-of-a-kind, you’re in the right place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will my journal age?

Like something loved. Full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather darkens and softens over time. It’ll pick up scuffs, marks, and wear — all of which tell the story of how you’ve used it. The more you carry it, the more it becomes yours.

What if something’s wrong with my order?

Because each journal is made to order, we don’t accept returns or exchanges. That said, if something arrives damaged or incorrect, please get in touch. We’ll always do our best to make it right.

How do I care for my journal?

Full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather is durable and ages beautifully with use, but a little care goes a long way. Keep your journal away from excess moisture, and store it out of direct sunlight when not in use. If it starts to feel dry, you can gently condition it with a small amount of leather balm — just test in a discreet spot first. Over time, the leather will darken, soften, and develop a natural patina, shaped by your touch and daily life.
